History of Children’s Vegetable Garden

Children’s Vegetable Garden Program

In the spring of 1983, Brigadier General Dave Thomas and members of the San Antonio Men’s Garden Club established the legacy of the Children’s Vegetable Garden Program. Soon after, the Men’s Garden Club became the founding Fathers of the Extension Bexar County Master Gardeners in the fall of 1989.

The Children’s Vegetable Garden Program has flourished as one of the oldest ongoing vegetable teaching garden programs for the nation. This commitment of growth is made possible through partnerships of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, their Extension Bexar County Master Gardeners, San Antonio Botanical Garden, San Antonio Botanical Society, and other volunteer groups.

About The Program

The San Antonio Botanical Garden, Texas A&M AgriLIFE Extension Service and the Extension Bexar County Master Gardeners oversee the children’s vegetable garden program. Youth from the ages of 8 to 13 learn hands-on practical skills of local vegetable gardening with emphasis’ on natural gardening techniques and environmental stewardship.

On 16 consecutive Saturday mornings in the spring and fall, children plant, weed, water, nurture, and harvest their individual plots under the mentorship of trained certified Extension Master Gardener Volunteers.

For a nominal fee, seeds, vegetable transplants, tools, etc. are furnished in which each child receives that special and individualized attention with numerous ‘Gardening Mentors’.  The spring and fall session concludes with a picnic, recognition ceremony and vegetable show.  Children can also earn their Junior Master Gardener –Golden ray Series certification by participating in fun, hands-on activities each week after they have tended their garden chores.

In order to gain the most from the learning experience and to help ensure successful growing, participants are required to attend all sessions (two absences are allowed).  Families are welcome to share the gardening experience with their child.
